Barcelona: The GSMA today announced that presented posthumously former GSMA CEO Robert g. Conway with GSMA's first Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious award recognizes the significant efforts of Rob in advancing the State of the mobile industry, for the benefit of mobile operators, companies across the ecosystem, Governments, businesses and billions of consumers around the world. The award was presented to Rob's family members during a special ceremony Sunday at the Mobile World Congress.
"Rob has been a tireless supporter of the mobile industry, promoting the good work of GSMA mobile operator members and defend the powerful impact and benefits of the mobile world," said Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President, GSMA and President and CEO, Telenor Group. "On behalf of the Board, GSMA and our entire membership and as a friend and longtime colleague, I'm very honored to be able to present this important Prize to Rob's family and to share our appreciation for his many successes in this dynamic sector."
Rob was perhaps best known for his longstanding leadership of the GSMA, the Association moving from his initial role of a quasi-standard in your organization that represents nearly 800 mobile operators in the world. His tenure of 12 years at the GSMA has seen rapid and dramatic evolution of the GSM family of technologies, moving from 2 g networks, mobile broadband and, finally, commercial deployments of LTE 4 g. During this time, the world has witnessed the launch of the first smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices-connected and the development of many mobile services-improve the lives and life-saving. The industry has made several significant milestones during this time, surpassing 5 billion mobile connections globally in 2010.
One of the most important results of Rob at the GSMA was the acquisition of an organisation's flagship event, the Mobile World Congress. Since that time, the Mobile World Congress has moved from Cannes to Barcelona, where the event flourished, becoming the industry's must-attend annual event and attracts more than 75,000 participants every year.
Rob was also instrumental in the early efforts to "connect the unconnected", attracting the entire mobile sector through a 2006 competition to develop an emerging market handset sub-$ 30. He was also the main force behind the creation of the GSMA Mobile for development organisation, which focuses on bringing together the mobile operator members of GSMA, the mobile industry and the broader community of development of commercial mobile services to those less well off in emerging markets.
In mobile Rob's career extended beyond the GSMA; as an Executive at Motorola, was instrumental in introducing the first deployment of GSM in Latin America in the 1990s and led the company's efforts that led to the creation of mobile operators in Brazil and Egypt. Rob was also the International Affairs Director of VimpelCom, which serves them to administration, from 2011 to 2013.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is part of the annual Global Mobile Awards, which will be presented at 14.30 on Tuesday, February 25. Global Mobile Awards will be held in Hall 1, Hall 4, Fira Gran Via and are open to attendees of the Mobile World Congress from all finalist companies, regardless of the type of passage, as well as all other Mobile World Congress attendees holding Platinum, gold, silver, or press/analyst passes.
